How can I help?

Past Work includes:

Professional Development

As I teacher educator, I’ve worked with districts to design ongoing teacher development on DEI issues. Some possibilities:

  • new teacher induction rooted in equity

  • on-going teacher development circles/book groups, virtual or in person

  • LGBTQ+ supportive policies and programs

  • local context analysis: who are our students? what are their histories?

.

Consulting:

As researcher, I have conducted qualitative studies in the field on DEI topics, held group and one-on-one interviews, reviewed curriculum, mentored teachers and evaluated programs for multilingual learners and newcomers. I’ve helped to write a multi-leveled framework for evaluating the success of educational programs for urban youth in extended learning time settings.

Writing

As a writer, I have produced a wide assortment of published works (articles, popular media, blogs, a book). I have also run writing retreats and workshops for junior faculty and have been an invited manuscript reviewer for many educational journals.

Curriculum Design

As a former teacher and content specialist, I teach courses in the Science of Reading (Masters level and post-grad) and Elementary Social Studies (undergrad) for upwards of 20 years. I’ve worked with a school to rewrite their K-8 social studies curriculum to be more DEI- and local-context focused.

Speaking/Keynoting

As a public speaker, I have presented at dozens of conferences, both nationally (AERA, NEERO, AACTE, NERA, etc) and internationally (London, Venice, Florence, Lisbon) on DEI topics.

-Anti-Blackness in schools

-Poverty in K-12 settings

-Equity in college classrooms

-Whiteness in K-16 spaces

-Preparing teachers for diverse settings

-Teaching refugee youth

-Exposing colorblindness
